  The most confused film I’ve ever watched in my entire life. Things just happen for 10-15 minutes at a time for 2 hours. I’ve never seen any Rose of Versailles before so googling “manga lady oscar” after the film ended to see what standard of androgyny they were pretending Catriona MacColl lived up to made my fucking jaw drop. What was the point of any of this?

  this is what happens when you get so immersed in the subtext and the spiritual significance and the meta-narrative of it all that you forget why people watch films. this is nothing. this is less than nothing. this is the film equivalent of those online marxist LARPers who can't give you a clear answer about what their socio-economic vision of the future is without obfuscating it behind a wall of inaccessible terminology and metaphor.

  it's not a particularly good-looking film, but it's a heartfelt one. this was directed by the guy who would go on to portray Kuze in Yakuza 0 (2015), two years after this film released - the general mythos around mr ozawa is that he received mindblowing sloppenheimer 9000 head from a trans woman at some point, changing his hardened ways and turning him into an ally, but the truth is that he was actually in love with a trans woman…
