The Whalebone Box 2019
Full of engaging ideas about the ‘long dialogue’ humankind is in with our ancestors, both behind us and ahead. Rambling down some bizarre and nonsensical paths at times, the film takes the piss out of itself enough to acknowledge the absurdity of these digressions. Whilst it feels in some ways like it might be better suited to art gallery viewing, I thought the film as a whole built up some gnarly transcendent energy.
I can now use this energy to echo the screams of a murdered mermaid.

The B&W first act is flawless - Judy singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, the tornado, Toto. Toto! After that, it flip-flops between a grotesque, plastic nightmare and moments of beauty and wonder. But let's come back to Toto. Because by the grace of all that is sweet and holy, the subtlety and nuance of Toto's performance is simply breathtaking. Give the dog a bone. It's sad to think that shortly after the film's release Toto died of a barbiturate overdose at a munchkin house party. But that's Hollywood dogs for you.
