There was something incredibly voyeuristic about this film. Everything felt contrived and unlikely. This was one of my favorite films we've watched this semester. Spike Lee's style as a director is unapologetically thought provoking. The film highlights the interconnectedness of community yet contrast that against the rising tensions among racial and ethnic groups. This wasn't my first time watching a silent film but it was the first time I enjoyed a silent film as much as a film in sound and color. I was impressed by how expressive each character was despite having no dialogue to convey meaning and intent. Charlie Chaplin's portrayal of the tramp was hilarious. The tramp was flamboyant and feminine which left me wondering if the homoeroticism between the tramp and the millionaire was intentional or a comedic coincidence.…
