Watched the first four episodes with my mom, and we really liked this so far! Anthology series like this always excite me since they often play with the episodic format in a really unique way. It’s especially rad to see an anthology which takes advantage of its interconnectedness. Seeing characters from one episode as background characters in the other, which oftentimes recontextualizes their actions in meaningful ways. Episodes 3 and 4 really sold me on this. 2 is probably my favorite of the bunch so far, but I’m excited to see how this all plays out. Real cute stuff here!

    Barking Dogs Never Bite

I fuck with Bong Joon-ho’s dark slapstick humor HEAVY. He gleefully hops between genres and tones like second nature—fucking somehow makes dog murder goofy and there’s also some Scooby-Doo-ass chase sequences, juxtaposed with some really uncomfortable domestic disputes.

Wish this was paced snappier because sequences can really drag. Also takes a surprisingly long time for the separate narratives to come together, given what the convergence actually results in. Still, some really entertaining stuff in here. Those barking dogs really never did bite! Probably should have though.

    Hmmmm…

    Ok.

The spectacle and soundscape are at levels of grandioseness I struggled to even fathom. Multiple sequences had me feeling one with the picture, which is partly due to seeing this in IMAX with a near-perfect seat, but Villeneuve has such strong sensibilities with composing shots, using sound, and giving a real sense of scale to everything that makes it so easy to become immersed.

It’s important to note that I have somehow managed to never see a trailer…
