Wove together so many threads/narratives/timelines seamlessly...the AIDS epidemic, the queer community in 1970s/80s/90s NYC, a photographer's journey, addiction, how mental health can impact and splinter a family, and ultimately, profoundly, the opioid crisis and the demonic Sackler family...this movie hit it all without feeling rushed. If you loved Patti Smith's Just Kids, this is for you.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A psychedelic journey; a donkey little red riding hood; an interrogation of our relationship with sentience...I could go on. I saw this one on my 28th birthday and was worried it was the wrong choice for a birthday flick. I was WRONG - I left the theatre amped, confused, moved, and dying to debrief. The AI robot scene was BEYOND. This movie, in some ways, was about how we do or don't project our lived experience and emotions onto other beings, animal or otherwise. The ending was perfect. Death is so anti-climatic.
