In today’s cinematic landscape, I think a wholly original story is very hard to come by. This is an excellent film for that reason and many others. I would also argue this is one of Jake’s top three best performances, if not his absolute best. #gyllen-all

It’s really impressive that Tim Robinson (and Andrew DeYoung) can take such awkward and unhinged moments and make them this funny. The plot isn’t breaking any new ground (Friendship owes a huge debt to The Cable Guy and a bit of a nod to I Love You, Man) but as a whole, it’s laugh out loud funny the entire time. If Tim Robinson’s brand of humor is in your wheelhouse, this is a complete home run.

Everything about this movie is perfect as far as I’m concerned. It’s a classic whodunit that’s weird and funny and has an outstanding cast (Chris Evans in particular is at the top of his game). Rian Johnson made a masterpiece with this one.

There’s an interesting premise here but everything else falls short. Specifically, why is this a musical? The songs are unbearable and rarely amount to more than a mumble over sparse music.

Every spot where Bird Box fell short, this one delivered. The tension is ratcheted up the entire run time because you, as the viewer, are as clueless as the characters. It’s super watchable and has an oh-so-satisfying (albeit predictable) ending. And finally, deer are portrayed as the creepy assholes they really are.

It takes too long to get going but the third act is pretty satisfying. I think it would’ve been a better film if it wasn’t framed by the Covid pandemic; it seems like most of the story didn’t really need that scope and also, who wants to relive that?

Holy bloated story, Mr. Hunt. This is way too heavy on the flashbacks, although some of the callbacks and a certain re-appearance are fun. Otherwise it’s pretty standard fair for the series. Shoutout to Tramell Tillman, who steals every scene he’s in.

I HATED this. Sure, there are some striking visuals, but I don’t think I’ve ever disliked two characters more or found them less believable. Sandra Bullock’s character panics throughout the entire movie (despite being a fucking ASTRONAUT) and Clooney swoops in to save her so much so that she even credits him when he’s a hallucination. And they don’t seem to know each other at all, as if they wouldn’t have trained together for hundreds of hours. These characters make zero sense. I should’ve watched The Martian instead. #Cuarónology

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie with a tighter script; every beat, every moment is completely necessary. On top of that, it’s hilarious and the music is fantastic. What a perfect movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s best movie. Hugh Jackman’s best movie. Denis Villeneuve’s best movie. Best movie.

Also, watching Jarhead > End of Watch > Prisoners is an incredible arc if you treat all three of Gyllenhaal’s roles as the same character.

It’s not the hilarious classic I remember. The entire movie rests on Carrey making funny faces and throwing his body around. It’s funny but there’s better 90’s comedies and better Jim Carrey movies.

Kiddo Review: “I’m not gonna lie… ha… it started a little slow. 8.5/10.”

Quite possibly the most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen, in no small part due to how plausible the whole thing is. A masterclass of tension, gore, sweat, hardcore, and terror. Also, nazi punks fuck off.
