Absolutely stunning vision, and tragedy that it was never finished. From the first scenes you're immersed in a wholly unique sci-fi universe. The costumes alone are worth the watch. Unfortunately the missing portions of the film told in voice-over greatly detracted from the experience. While Zulawski obviously can't be blamed for being censored, his choice to tell the scenes over footage of "modern" (1980's) footage of Poland is distracting and makes portions of the film difficult to follow. I also…

Having heard a lot of praise about this movie yet knowing almost nothing of its content I was absolutely floored watching it. The film somehow manages to be highly literal yet also dripping in subtext. The first third is often gorgeous in the Tarkovsky-esque manner of Russian beauty in nature. Finally watched the last of Kurosawa's 7 classics in his amazing run from 1950-63, with what is quite possibly my favorite (at least of the 5 samurai films in said run, High and Low is neck and neck here). Already a master director, the camera work and clarity of character and plot in this film make it perhaps his most accessible. Also displays the impact he would have on Westerns of both the Hollywood and Spaghetti variety. Highly recommend to film-buffs and casual viewers alike.

This is a film less about the movie you are watching and more about the idea behind it. By showing the mundane home life of the Officer running Auschwitz and his family and never giving even a glimpse of the horror happening on the other side of the wall, it causes you to spend most of the film in your own head. Many people will leave this film confused and even disappointed, but it's value, like that of most great art, is in what it provoked inside you.
