    This was an odd one. The direction felt so fresh and new, and I can see how it went on to influence many, many films since...I just couldn't really get into the story.

    I fell that much like Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev I'll get more out of this on repeated viewings.

    Now this is how you do a comic book film!

    I admit that I've never read the original manga series but I thoroughly enjoyed the excellent 2014 anime series, and this film does it justice.

    The story closely follows that of the source material with the only changes serving to focus the plot in non-destructive way. Some of the changes I even prefer over the original story.

    The effects are nothing special but they do the job without being distracting.…

    I watched this in the cinema not long after release sometime in 2009.

    All I can say in favour of this mess was that the CGI was pretty good and I liked the line about popcorn.

    A quirky drama with strong comedy elements that isn't afraid to get dark when it needs to.

    Satoru is a young schoolboy who is unwilling to leave the housing project where he has spent his whole life. At first this is played for comedy, but as the film goes on we discover the reasons behind his compulsive habits and the film gets much more mature.
