    Alien: Romulus

    ★★

Romulus might be my least favorite Alien film (AvP films don't count obviously). There is just nothing new or interesting in the film. Like not a single thing. It's just a remix of various elements from the previous films often with much worse execution. It's also absolutely shameless with empty fan service. Probably worst film I have seen from 2023 (and I have seen several DC superhero films).

I loved the novel by Iain Reid. It's a very effective and super tense minimalist closed space scifi thriller. A wheelchair-bound woman returns to her father's house after not seeing him for a long time. She is greeted by her stepmother who tells her that her father is away on business but will return shortly. One night however she sees her father's dead corpse in the guest cottage. Striking black-and-white cinematography and a genuinely smart and surprising script help make this one one of the more memorable Hammer films.

When a woman's husband disappears, the woman confronts Death who gives her three chances to save a person's life with love. If she succeeds even once, she will get her husband back. The film is Fritz Lang's artistic breakthrough. It is highly ambitious for it's time depicting three separate episodes set in Middle East, Venice and China with some impressive sets, costumes and visual effects. The structure is reminiscent of Griffith's Intolerance that came five years earlier but the film…
