While it takes some risks, the general light-hearted tone smooths off the edges of this satire. Eckhardt and his million dollar smile are perfect in the role, and the solid cast do their best.

A by-the-book WWII submarine flick, except on a convoy ship. The ol’ first mate vs. captain trope, with one pushing to sacrifice all for the greater good and the other trying to save the crew from annihilation. It works though, and has a wrinkle or two - at least enough to be enjoyable.

An affecting film, the true-life horrors are indeed horrifying. I appreciated that the story was told in a more straightforward, journalistic manner than, say, Casino or GoodFellas. The scope of the film, the rich interiors, the grizzled camps, the Masonic lodge, the traditional costumes, gave the film majesty, showing starkly the amoral cruelty of the motley crew of white men trying to bilk the Osage (played by a lot of musicians, weirdly). Solid work, and I was never bored during its runtime but I think it could have been edited tighter and been just as affecting.
