Sonically cannot fault it. Visually it felt like I was watching a black screen 40% of the movie. The black and white shots didn’t add much to it either. The plot was non-existent and dragged a lot of the way. The horror as well, well it wasn’t really there, but was more gruesome/unsettling. The kind of film the “cinema academic” would probably enjoy, like Banshee of Inisherin . Nosferatu sounding Arab did make me chuckle. The saving grace for sure was Willem Dafoe.
Honestly, I think it is better than the first. Has similar symbolisms of death, how both of their stories seem to mirror each other, but Lucius was fleshed out more than Maximus. Him wearing his father’s chest plate was a nice touch. Also Denzels character was amazing (even if he didn’t lose his NY accent lol). VIOLENCE IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE! Also making the great Marcus Aurelius as bad as the other Romans was a nice touch. Pedro Pascal, although…
Don’t get it wrong, should be 4 stars. But felt like death after watching it. Pure depression movie that’ll have you feelin like shit after. Not for the faint hearted.
Struggling to understand the hype around the movie. Felt like it tried too hard to be a socially conscious movie. Maybe it’s because I’m watching it for the first time in 2022
