There’s some funny moments in this preachy, thematically-confused, all-over-the-place and poorly thought out mess of a film. Felt like an academic exercise for Pattinson and as though Bong has been given a massive budget, not enough time and no editor. Ambitious but indulgent.

The Seed of the Sacred Fig 2024
The last third is The Shining but with better rice. A beautiful and very affecting story slightly let down by being baggy and not always being convincing on the level of character motivation. Still excellent.

Megalopolis 2024
As much of a batshit folly as you’d expect from a film the writer/director/producer has fantasised for decades about making before pouring in $100m of his own cash. Sometimes pretentious, sometimes completely incomprehensible, all over the place thematically and as baroque and filled with non sequiturs as one of Adam Driver’s monologues. But Coppola’s really trying something and often succeeding (i.m.humble.o). Shot beautifully, the look is like nothing I’ve seen and the soundtrack is great. Makes up for its considerable flaws. Epic, admirable and lacking in sanity. Someone should ask Shia Laboeuf if he’s actually acting or just playing himself.
