    Paddington in Peru

    ★★★

Family-friendly, warm-hearted, wholly predictable and utterly vanilla. Bringing the quintessential fish-out-of-water Paddington literally into his natural habitat by turning his exploits into a by-the-numbers adventure romp, much of what makes him (and this series) special is lost. The superb cast ensures it's never much of a drag though, and "Paddington in Peru" always feels fun and breezy - especially for a trek through the Amazon.

I cried laughing as Paul Rudd used a ring light to search his butthole for anomalies; I fully appreciated his chemistry with Leslie Mann (in this and many other moments); and sat through numerous entirely needless scenes in this Scorsese-length comedy about overcoming first world problems while reaching middle age.

"Society of Snow" is the most uplifting of horror stories. It goes beyond familiar man vs nature trappings precisely because of the absence of strife and human brutality. Instead, we see hardship and loss, made bearable by solidarity and resilience. This doesn't mean it's an easy watch. Oh no. The crash, the avalanche, and the impossible decisions faced by the survivors are deeply harrowing. Director Bayona turns this true tale into something incredibly immersive, both humanist and otherworldly at the…
