I think the critic reception of this movie is pretty in line with what I think of it. its pretty simple. entertaining enough to be a decent movie, but Bong Joon Ho has set an extremely high bar with Parasite which makes this movie's lack of societal commentary feel surprising and lacking.

The top comment captures it perfectly. Frankly people can be kind of stupid understanding nuance with movies surrounding sex work, especially at the time of its release.
I think critics at the time tended to think the only type of criticism a filmmaker could have is "sexualization is bad"! So when they see titties flopping everywhere in Showgirls they assume it's a low effort movie with nothing to say.
