Ghost in the Shell 1995
this is one of my favourite movies
The cityscape is rough, brutalist, concrete. It's a dystopian movie with early technology-era looking into the future aesthetic. Griddy and full of soul. The storyline is somehow not the main focus. Rather there's a layer of emotional expression throughout the entire movie, created through imagery and soundscape. It seems to reflect the main characters experience of her self (a cyborg) and the world through emotions of loneliness, isolation, identity, nostalgia and hope. Def. a trans allegory! Won't spoil the end but it's so good.
