i love the opening scene. it immediately subverts expectations by having smeagol’s brother be the one who find the ring, and selfishness overcomes smeagol as he strangles and kills his own brother, which adds so much more to his character and the power of the ring. it also foreshadows the climax of the film. another thing i noticed is the color of the opening sequence starts out very vibrant…

story is really good, acting is really good, gyllenhaal and peña’s chemistry is great, but the direction was not my favorite.
the found footage gimmick would work if it were executed a little better, though i’m not the biggest fan of found footage. it just isn’t really done very well in this movie, it is filmed as if everyone is holding a camera in really unnatural positions and just doesn’t really work for me.
