the technical aspects stun - the lighting, the cinematography, the callbacks to Murnau, the blocking, the pans that continually had me on the verge of a panic attack, the sound editing!!!! deliciously insane, i'm so glad the first half of this movie exists.
as for the second one, i unfortunately don't care as much, the creative ideas were cohesive, the sound and visuals remained stunning, but all of that kind of lost its initial thrilling factor as the film progressed.…

the mise-en-scene had me absolutely awed... i am once again proven right that no one does colour in film like europeans did in the 60s and 70s

the crucial thing about "conclave" is that it's visually stunning - i love when art understands red and utilizes it to its full potential. the film's second biggest strength is that it makes you want to believe and i find that really precious. i'm sure it's going to be deemed naive and unrealistic by many, but, personally, i don't care - it made my little idealistic heart happy, unlike most aspects of religion and politics in real life, and for that i am rather grateful.

what is it with contemporary american "satire" movies that are generally fresh and interesting on a stylistic level attempting to cover real-life social issues by using an unbearably literal, one-dimensional symbolism which makes their different elements (both textual and formal) come down to the same message over and over again?? I'm starting to believe such parody really doesn't work with this kind of subject matter bc it usually results in everything becoming super repetitive or almost insignificant
