Good test of my language skills having to watch in French w Russian subtitles.. but I laughed and I cried (as they say) so must’ve got the gist. Felt especially poignant having seen the statistic in the news today of how many sons have killed their mothers in the last X years — didn’t affect sympathy for Steve, but painted Diane’s choice in a different light. Also weird that I had a conversation with an Italian-American today called Steve who proceeded to list every other Italian-American named Steve who grew up in his vicinity. Steve count today must’ve topped 100.
Wish I could say this was some Felicity Jones research for The Brutalist, but really I told two female snowboarders (separately) that it was essential that they watched it and thought I should practise what I preach. Yes it’s more Pretty Woman than Anora, but it’s a great period piece (that navy and pink Jack Wills gilet…) and the Succession actor genuinely made me laugh
brb, just googling where to find this NY enclave of Russian-speaking diaspora..
In all seriousness though, I was fully convinced that everything in this film could/would happen. Vanya at once Timothée Chalamet, my
French kick-boxing instructor, and the Russian-Latvian teenagers with pit vipers and neck tattoos in the Riga club VIP. Disagree with criticisms on here that we should’ve had more background on Ani. Like a piece of theatre (lol), we don’t realllyyy know any of the characters and I’m glad we weren’t appeased with reductive flashbacks of her journey to the industry.
