It's difficult to parse themes as bleak as this. On one hand, you can gauge it as misery in its rawest form—horror that you can flip past while scrolling through the news, searching for something more ‘exciting’ to put on while you clean the house.

Or, it is MISERY PORN for the sake of being misery porn.

The film pulls you into its poverty-stricken, helpless world so vividly that, regardless of interpretation, it succeeds either way.

All of the praise this film gets makes absolutely zero sense. The cinematography is tokusatsu tier, with few to no different angles and shots. The characters are all unlikable and irritating to watch. Every thing that happens feels like it exists solely to shock the viewers or show something taboo for the sake of... being taboo. The religious theming is incredibly shallow, just like the entire film.

I genuinely felt like I watched nothing for 4 hours straight. I would give it a 0/5 if I could.

    Ruthless and decadent.

The film takes all of the extremely grim dark tropes from the original work and translates it into something so violently unperturbed that it was occasionally hard to look at. It checks off all of the boxes that makes a "super cool badass 90s hero" movie work. There are moments of clarity, or at least, when the bloody faces dried out, in the same way other hyper-dystopian fiction showcases it.

Sure, all of these people are in…
