"Would You stop pretending to be on my side" the amount of times you've wanted to say that to someone but 1) Real life doesn't work that way and 2) You're Australian and they've probably seen this movie.
The characters are all so charming and realistic. Even the two racist lines are meant well and feel like something you'd go 'Dad!' about.
The scene where Daryl compared his situation with the plight of the Aboriginal Australians could have so easily…
Much like how Shelley Duvall sacrificed her mental health for The Shining. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor sacrificed any hope for a healthy relationship for Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf.

To me this is a movie about trying to share your pain with someone and having them absolute unequipped for it. Christine attempts to understand and accept his pain by removing the mask but is utterly revolted by what she sees underneath.
It is ultimately a reversal of the Beauty and the Beast Story with the horror being Christine thinking she can handle his pain but can't. She wanted to but couldn't.
Definitely a movie that benefits from multiple rewatchings. Got a lot more out of it a second time
