Bit of a bummer but I can't help but feel disappointed with this movie. There is a lot to like here and I'm happy to hear from the people who really liked this but I can't help but feel like I wanted to like it more than I did.

Got to yap about anime today and this movie was at the center of it all. Seems like this was a hit! (and not just because I discovered some students' letterboxd accounts lol)
Never thought I'd see the day where I could geek out about anime academically (my MAL page has had a self-depricating joke about trying to be taken seriously for nearly a decade) and yet here we are

Something about all the different elements that are so great in their own right added together makes this a wonderful whole that's even better than its parts. The gothic fairytale design of everything, the cast and their performances, the humanist optimism that can't help but also be pessimistic, the enlightenment era politics and philosophy. I want to live in this movie but also this movie is gross and I want to point and laugh at it
