Emilia Pérez 2024
Overwhelmingly left feeling kind of bored…. 2 hour long movie with nothing that particularly moved me. I found the cinematography and editing to be kind of bleh, 3 instances of low fps slow motion is crazy. Funky jump cuts n kind of lame double exposures. Somewhat lame stereotypical portrayals of honestly every country even tangentially mentioned. Some of the musical numbers were kind of interesting? I think selena gomez has the timothee/zendaya in dune problem where she’s just so distinctly American and popularly recognizable that I struggle to imagine her as anyone else. It’s just like oh Selena Gomez is there.

Was gonna give it a 2.5 but considered recommending it to a human being who I know and couldn’t do it. Piece By Piece 2024
I was worried that the pg ification would make it overly sanitary but I think the lego medium let them get away with things they wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. Genuinely a very inspiring and touching story of the creative process and a pretty visually rich movie. Clearly made with a lot of love and care for both lego and music culture. Also the mini figures were awesome, they did a really good job making recognizable silhouettes (pusha t, jay-z, etc). I wish malice was present in the clipse discussion but I know he’s hard to find now.
