The fact that it's taken 4 excellent films in a row to give this franchise its due place within the action thriller canon is a testament to Cruise's singular tenacity. Its action cinema lineage is crystal clear, all the way back to that train arriving at that station, that guy hanging off a clock, that cop driving through San Francisco, that women shooting aliens, and that archaeologist running away from a rock.
Ultimately, it's less than than the sum of its admittedly spectacular parts. A technological marvel to be sure, with some strong performances - Emma Stone and Lindsay Duncan are standouts, and having previously been baffled by Ed Norton's acting it's great to see him let loose and tackle something so unselfconsciously - but its curiously emotionally dry, and its conclusion that madness + ego = triumph is odd.
So much chatter about something so benign! It's a fun film, I laughed out loud many times, and my kids loved it. Therefore it fulfilled its ambition and serves its purpose, no? Worth watching for Kate McKinnon alone, who sublimely channels the strange, singular comedy of Madeline Kahn in any number of Mel Brooks films.
