Shuffle 1981
Ishii is the kind of director whose scrappiness in getting badass films made is inspiring. I discovered him in film school, and it was inspiring to hear that he never graduated and instead just kept using the school equipment until he got kicked out. Watching a film like this he made when he was younger than me is a reminder to stop the excuses and make something I can be proud of. He's always done things his way and the movies speak for themselves.

Poor Things 2023
Read the book for prep so my takeaways may be irrelevant to most Poor Things viewers. I wouldn’t say Yorgos does a bad job with the material, but watching this I couldn’t help think about how I would’ve handled a Poor Things adaptation, and would’ve taken pretty much an opposite approach (though I’d keep Robbie Ryan as DP in a heartbeat). This version strips the story of its Scottishness and leftism. Honestly, I‘m less shocked by the frank exploration of sexual politics than I would’ve been by the movie maintaining Bella’s support for John Maclean. Lame!
