The whole thing is super fun but that final 20 is breathtaking. McTernan locates something intensely primal in his action filmmaking and protagonists and turns it into an almost abstract display of light, shadow and muscle. War is hell.

It's rare you see a debut so in control of colour, music, framing and performance. And it's rare you see a film so intent on redefining itself; formally, structurally and conceptually.

What was unsettling for me wasn't really the stuff shown onscreen (though there are some spooky images) but this sense of unstoppable evil - which is kind of undercut by how easily he is killed. I mean I get that Ellen tricked him with her sexyness... I think I'm just annoyed cos I love Count Orlok he is so cute and stylish. On that note, Schreck's performance is so other-wordly it's hard to believe he isn't just a real vampire. Also Murnau frames idyllic nature and dark supernatural so beautifully. Amazing film with an amazing little cutesy main character I love you Count Orlok.
