Comedy is pretty much a dead genre, but luckily a film from over 40 years ago can serve as a reference point for what the genre could be when at its best. If you’re seeing Airplane for the first time, you’ll recognize many quotes as the origin of memes/jokes that endure 40 years later. Best of the Oscar nominees I’ve seen so far. The animation style and storytelling technique took a bit for me to get used to, but the real focus is the story—one that is rarely told and often overlooked. I admittedly do not know much about the hardships Afghanis face, as my knowledge extends only to criticizing the U.S. for its involvement. This film does a great job illustrating the collateral consequences of war on one’s family, identity, career/education, and sense of “home.”
