  I have some thoughts but tbh they’re probably all wrong. It’s the kind of film that feels at times brilliant AND boring. Whole chunks of it probably shouldn’t even be examined without first having knowledge of Chekhov’s play Uncle Vanya… which I do not... but I did read its Wikipedia article midway through the film and began forming crude 1:1 analogies to the film’s characters.   Took me a long time to get over the incongruity of what the film actually is vs my expectations for what a Steve McQueen film usually is. And tbh I don’t think the film really knows what it is either. It tries different tones on for size and never commits to a particular one.
