Generally, I don't consider myself an attentive viewer, but even so, I was surprised to learn that, according to Gore Verbinski, we were also supposed to be creeped out by how the characters didn't have shadows due to how the lighting was set. Dude. Your movie has absolutely everything, from the horse scene (not the most threatening animal one might think of, is it?) to the fact that the worst screamers were Samara's victims for some reason, and I was…

The movie feels like it was made before its time. A contemplative, artsy, indecently long, paradoxical gothic meta-horror that reflects on the genre and its interaction with other genres. Because you might think: okay, black horses? Check. A decrepit church full of morbid symbolism? Check. A creepy village? Check. Ghosts of wolves? Check. A pale and bleeding handmaid? Check. A Romantic protagonist, ready for anything, going through inhumane suffering? Check. An offbeat womanchild of a heroine? (Should France have its…

If not for credits, I'd never even think it could be made by the author of Midsommar -- but eventually, it makes some sense. It's as if Ari Aster has decided to make the exact opposite of Midsommar while still keeping some of his signature tropes (not the best of them, though).

In fact, I'd much rather believe it was made by Yorgos Lanthimos! Because. Horror devices with no horror whatsoever? Check. A social critique of so many things simultaneously…
