wow, this movie is a pure spectacle. while i was excited going in by the jazz score and the beautiful colour palette, i was hesitant to watch the film, as i wasn’t sure how a movie where every single piece of dialogue is sung would go. but i quickly got over that doubt, and found myself trying to sing along with the characters (i don’t speak an ounce of french). a much more elegant and european proto La La Land, Jacque Demy’s masterpiece literally seemed to create the human being that is Damian Chezelle, a jazz loving, colour obsessed and sad romantic human being.

i realize now that this film was just an introduction for my younger self to a proto Lynchian cinematic landscape.

while in some aspects this film certainly does feel like someone’s first feature film, especially the with repetitive soundtrack, Blood Simple is a gritty and enjoyable ride. the neon lighting and intense moments in this film really stand out, very underrated just like Tokyo Drifter. the Coen brothers really are something, Joel’s portrayal of guilt and paranoia is really great.

“the night is full of weirdos”

sure is man. full of all sorts of blondies. this movie encapsulates the feeling of being totally alone in a big neon city, and also a McDonalds too. fantastically full of unique and interesting neo noir, grungy and “gun-foo” themes, blended together by Wong Kar-Wai’s masterful directing and Christopher Doyle’s amazing cinematography, colour and lighting expertise. another classic picture from my favourite Wong Kar-Wai on Earth.
