  I understand wanting to hype up a friend's project but nothing about this merits five stars. If you respect someone you approach their work critically. You offer praise where it's due, but you also address shortcomings. You acknowledge that they have room to grow and help them identify where. To praise without thoughtfulness is to suggest that one's art is so lacking in substance that you see no room for improvement.

  Evokes memories of my mother's hometown and extended family that no film ever has before. Hospital visits for dying relatives I barely knew, and later the reception after they'd been buried. Church services that never seemed to end, the office of my granddad's funeral home, and his mother's porch swing where she told stories and sat with a gun under her dress.

  I don't think any other camera would have been as effective at capturing what this was going for.…
