  Watching films that depict black stories can be emotionally exhausting. You rarely get a truly happy ending. You’re kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time.

  “Is her husband about to knock her around?”
  “Is he going to die?”
  “Wait, she’s not going to make it back from that trip?”
  “Why?!”

  You’re just waiting for the inevitable violence.

  Sylvie’s Love, however, was just so beautiful and sweet. It told a simple, endearing and honest love story.

  The fact that I was in that heighten state of anxiety means that at the end, that payoff, well my heart is still aflutter.
