It’s been a long while since I saw a movie, and then was still thinking about for days and days afterward. This film is one of those.
In 3 hrs 20 mins there is not a false note. Dialogue, costumes, sets, performances, all ring true.
A story so evil and tragic it’s hard to believe, and yet the film and the book on which it is based are evidently true to the historical record.
If this is the last film Scorsese directs, (and I sure hope it’s not), it will be a fitting career capstone.
Go see this film, it’s very nearly perfect.
