A movie about the cost of ultimate commitment to the bit. Nolan knows how to structure and pace the story well, and it's beautifully shot. As with most of his movies, though, I wish he would resist the urge to offer explanations for certain aspects, as well as the "twist" lands. For a movie about the power and value of secrets, part of me wishes The Prestige had kept a few. Like a good magic trick, the "magic" is in the *not* knowing. Once we know how it works, its power over us evaporates. I think there's even a line in here to that effect.

"There is still time"
A movie, at it's core, about the ways we repress ourselves, and the parts of ourselves we think we have to kill to become who we think we're expected to be, rather than be who we are.

A Streetcar Named Desire 1951
Feels like a stage set, but works well as a film. The stage lends the film a very claustrophobic feeling that works well for its themes.

Inland Empire 2006
The sheer audacity of this movie would prevent it from working if it was made by literally any other filmmaker. Only Lynch could make a digital camcorder improv film feel like a nightmare, stuck in my memory like a shard of glass.
