The first half was mesmerising. The overwhelming scale of the scenery, the darkness, and the ruined castle, combined with the use of stills and pans created a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere, and my god that moonlight!
The rest of the film was an experience which disturbed the senses, would have happily sat through another hour for more backstory to Hellen, or to let Dafoe explore more of the demon book; what do you mean he opens to the middle and happens…
The film is less an adaptation of the novel and more a take on McMurphy’s character, making Nicholson’s performance its greatest strength. This narrower focus may also be a weakness, but perhaps that's me projecting my expectations rather than accepting the film for what it is.
Treating the film separately from the book, it simplifies the story into a direct conflict between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched, with less attention on the critique of the 'system' overall, or even the other…
