Starve Acre 2023
Compelling folk horror that's less than the sum of its parts. Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark give strong performances, but flat direction leaves the film brooding rather than creepy.
Folk horror doesn't really work unless it has a foil to reflect against, be it Christianity or rationality; and here both are eschewed.
The threat here is temptation and an easy way out from grief. But in the absence of sacral belief or nihilistic acceptance, the choice to succumb to temptation…
