A fast-paced thriller that knows how to turn up the pressure, even if things do veer into the ridiculous at times. I only came across this because my dad and I were looking for something quick to watch before his baseball game started and this was the first movie we could find on Netflix that was 90 minutes or less. Ironically, his game ended up having a rain delay. Nevertheless, this movie was an exciting way to pass the time, though I prefer Sam Raimi's A Simple Plan, which has a similar type of story.

Port of Shadows 1938
The story is a little clunky, but wow, this movie is just dripping with atmosphere from the very first shot. The thick fog and heavy shadows occlude our vision in the same way the feelings of despair asphyxiate every character. All the performances are fantastic. Michèle Morgan reaches a level of maturity years above her age. It's hard to believe she was only seventeen when this was filmed. Her work here may only be matched by that from the adorable puppy.
