Hilarious movie with fantastic writing, better acting, and even better editing. Found its feet for me eventually but it took a while to really come back around to Anora. There was a lot going on, a lot of great, fun, thrilling, stuff going on, but I do feel that it took away from what we saw of Anora, the real Anora at the end. Maybe it’s selfish that I want to see more of her development in that direction, because we got such a great story for the rest of the movie that showed her coming to that point.
Really fun idea, acting was not my favorite but it had glimpses, very very long hour and a half or whatever it is, don’t think they laid everything out well because the ending felt almost like an epilogue. One of the top kill cams I’ve seen for the final death, that was a nice little cherry on top of an okay sundae.
Overall I feel like the whole movie was a force, and that seems to be backed up by Francis Ford essentially being forced to make it (info from Lombo), but there were really great shots woven in, and it had a lot of the godfather essence that can be enjoyed. I’m on a binge of watching samurai movies and this is the second one I’ve watched. I’m worried now that I’ve spoiled all of my fun by watching this epic movie too soon. This film uses an incredibly unique story, told through such a captivating narrative, and presented in a gorgeous series of shots, to capture a very specific period: the end of the samurai era. Some of the shots that represent this best: Hanshiro being finally killed by muskets…
