“What we really need to do is create a powerful sense of dread.”

Walked out of the theatre in a total haze. Part psychological horror, part neo-noir crime thriller – Cure explores the manifestation of repression through a series of grisly, interconnected murders in Tokyo. With masterful sound design and long, static shots, Kiyoshi Kurosawa ensures you're always uncomfortable, always unsettled, and always unsure of what's around the corner. Paced to perfection, the ominous atmosphere is inescapable – hypnotised by the surreal and meditative nature of the filmmaking.

    The Vanishing

    ★★★★★

A seductive terror of fate and the lengths of human obsession. Sluizer crafts a tense and suspenseful thriller by uniquely keeping us more informed than the protagonist through an effective non-linear narrative that pairs Rex's desperate (and tragically romantic) search with Lemorne's chillingly methodical (and often comedic) preparations, unknowingly drawing us into the exploration of our darkest fears. Donnadieu's performance is chillingly realistic, and the casual nature of Lemorne's horrific acts feels like his latest social experiment. By the end, we're fully invested, drinking the Kool-aid and sharing the gut-wrenching and traumatic fate.

A bold, unapologetic, and violent American giallo. Strikingly shot and filled with oppressive religious symbolism. Sheppard gives an eerie and unsettling performance as 12-year-old Alice (at the age of 19). Let down slightly by an early reveal, but an entertaining proto-slasher way ahead of its time. Oddity vibes from the mask and raincoat combo.

Starting MannVanuary early after stumbling across a screening of The Night of the Hunter at the oldest art house theatre in the Netherlands, Amsterdam's Filmtheater De Uitkijk.

Less noir than I expected, the beautifully shot Gothic thriller feels more like a dream-like Grimm fairy tale. Mitchum gives a devilish performance, full of charm and sleaze, as he relentlessly stalks his prey in hopes of a payday in Depression-era West Virginia – justifying his terrible deeds and ambition behind a twisted…

    Blood Simple

Director's Cut. The debut feature from the Coens (and McDormand) is a stylish, pulpy, blood-soaked neo-noir driven by greed, fear and an escalating series of nightmarish events. Blood Simple demonstrates that murder is far from simple – messy kills, piles of incriminating evidence, and sub-par clean-ups generate a constant wave of tension and guilt-ridden anxiety.
