This film had me rooting throughout for it to be as brilliant as it clearly aims to be, but after the dazzling ride offered in the first half, the knottier, boggier second half never quite coheres. If you will indulge a cute thought; it feels as if the film itself, like Van Buren, is infatuated with Lazslo Toth, but also like Van Buren, struggles to match the greatness it sees in him.

Great leading performance by Sophie Thatcher but this played out a little too much by the numbers. There wasn’t a twist you couldn’t see coming a mile a way and it can only offer a boiler-plate take on its subject matter.
