The Apprentice 2024
Hard to look at this one just as a movie without all the baggage attached to watching a movie about Donald Trump while he’s in office. It feels wrong to give any more attention to this man, and so the question for me was does the movie justify itself in doing so? It certainly paints a picture of him that would be hard to admire, but I think on a deeper level it contextualizes him as the logical conclusion to the attitudes of the American ruling class in a potent way. Definitely an interesting watch.

Emilia Pérez 2024
Hard to believe this is so widely acclaimed and leading in Oscar nominations this year, this was not a good movie. I went into it already knowing the writer/director had very sparing experience with the people he was portraying but even if I hadn’t, the lack of care to actually portray their perspectives seems glaringly evident. Not helped by the confused and confusing storytelling and the baffling decision to tell the story through Emilia Pérez’s abducted lawyer-turned-international consultant/associate/family correspondent who she didn’t talk to much. Not to mention the literally abysmal lighting for at least half the movie, for the half visible cherry on top.
