I’m not sure how much of this was constrained by the book, but it feels like this doesn’t hit its full potential. The central premise is a great hook and there’s a few parts where it teases wonderfully existential questions, then drops them to pivot to its annoyingly caricaturistic antagonists who are amusing at first, but never get more intimidating or interesting.
