Groundbreaking, genre defining comedy. A gag reel of a movie where somehow the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Infinitely quotable, often hilarious. It’s hard to describe to someone who didn’t live through the 70s how big disaster movies were except maybe to compare them to superhero movies today. That a parody outlasts and outshines all of them speaks to the qualIty of the writing, directing and performances. Leslie Nielsen of course steals the show but Lloyd Bridges and Robert Stack are incredible in surprise comic turns.
Pre 911 military humor was possible without facing a load of knee jerk sanctimony. Stripes has more of a 70s movie sensibility and Bill Murray is at his inspirational slacker best. Great direction. The supporting cast is genius, especially John Candy, Warren Oats, P. J. Soles, Sean Young and John Larroquette. If I had to pick just one from Bill Murray’s run of great comedies it’s Stripes. “That’s the fact, Jack.”
This was my first movie obsession. It was at our local movie house forever when it came out. I paid to see it more than any other movie I’m sure. It had a major influence on me and how I imagined high school friendships and relationships would be like even though it was set in a much different time. I loved the cast. I love the earnestness and urgency and that it takes place in a single, pivotal night. I know all the scenes by heart.
Smart, angst ridden, often hilarious and earns its heart warming finale. A dream team buddy comedy for me. Steve Martin keeps his performance on simmer for much of the movie which makes it a real treat to watch him cut loose. John Candy is the most naturally gifted comedians I’ve ever watched and makes every scene he’s in his own.
