At the outset the film is promising. Luxurious wardrobes and setting as well as a wonderful cast. Depp’s presence in the film as King Louis XV is delightful, but this story is about Maïwenn’s character Jeanne du Barry. Perhaps the expectation that the film would be akin to Dangerous Liasons was unrealistic. It is a period film that in chronological order tells the tale of the King’s mistress who ostracized. The casting of Benjamin Lavernhe is perfect as well. Lavernhe…

    John Wick: Chapter 4

Mid work week going to a movie theater is not my usual game plan. But John Wick 4 was worth the indulgence. John Wick 4 engages in minor indulgences as well. I looked forward to Hiroyuki Sanada's (from Twilight Samurai) performance, among others in this latest addition to the franchise. I saw the promise of Twyla Tharp like choreography with any number of assassins using different fighting styles to defeat Wick. The film delivered. A cleaner plot than its predecessor and action sequences that played out like modern dance. Keanu Reeves is natural and instinctive as John Wick and the film was worth the wait.

If you have seen Denzel Washington in “Othello” or “Much Ado About Nothing” you already know how comfortable Washington is with Shakespeare. If you have seen Frances McDormand in anything you already know she is one of the best actresses of the age. Every cast member delivers superbly, but the real acting sensation of the film is Kathryn Hunter who contorts her body and delivers every piece of text as all three witches with a physicality and nuance only a…

Before the Kingsman agency existed a network of spies led by Orlando during World War I was formed. Orlando describes the network’s advantage this way “while British intelligence listens at key holes, our people are actually in the room.” This film is a prequel to the other two films in the franchise. The prior films are based on Millar’s comic book series; this film is the back story to how the Kingsman spy agency was formed. Unlike its predecessors, The…
