The double sided saving grace is Ellen Burstyn as Sara Goldfarbe. You cannot look away. Her scenes are too convincing. They are sympathetic, evocative, or either hear wrenching. (NOT an exaggeration. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar as Best Actress for a reason. A strong reason)
I felt deceived watching this. The premise and trailer were faithful in portraying the basics: a wayward male sex worker eeks out a living, juggling between drug use, debauchery, and longing. Those were all present.
But the emotional *depth* you'd expect from a French drama was absent. Any back story about how the protagonist wound up selling sex, why he is so careless/listless, and/or why he insists on chasing after an uninterested lover are unexplained. They're just givens foisted on…
