A fascinating Russian doll of a film. While on the surface it is a rip-roaring Hollywood satire of the industrial-economic state of American democracy catalyzed by a doom-bringing comet, it both implicates itself in the creation of and mutes itself from making Impact (capitalization intentional). By branding itself a piece that has been made by Isherwell’s company Bash its central arc is posited as propaganda, a vehicle for the narrative that Bash would “like you to see.” Yet in painting…

If only a studio film would let itself unfold its own logic and exploit it for meta-cinematic satire and enjoyment for their audience. Oh, right, that movie is called The Player and unfortunately this is a Sci Fi Action movie that still has to re-fold itself into action sequences that need to be Justified. If anyone knows a movie that IS the first forty minutes, let ur boi know.

Ole bait and switch. Easygoing affair romantic comedy that manages to pack in some serious pointers on the state of information, the role of culture, the deterioration / transformation of social relations and how profound it still is when people really share themselves with each other. Juliette Binoche absolutely crushes it—pulls off a performance that manages to play into both her circumstances and how the audience would “expect her” to react (on the MANY levels at which that statement can be read). Really good for sophisticated, easygoing viewing.

While I did not like the movie, I really enjoyed watching it. Its light yet considerate approach, froofy story rendered very honestly by its cast, and thoughtfully produced filmmaking made for lovely Sunday date night material. It certainly does not make for a Great Film but sometimes it’s nice to go light on the approach.
