this whole movie is schrodinger's cat.
i think it answers its own questions through its overarching theme of duality. the word's (innate?) cruelty vs bella's (learned?) kindness, learning vs teachings, sexual liberation vs sexual servitude, life vs death, knowledge vs the lack thereof, morality vs immorality, science vs fiction. there is duality even in the film's color theory with its dramatic shifts from a world of color to a world without.
