The bad guys needed a replacement star, and then headed to one of the Magellanic Cloud galaxies. I was overly pleased with myself for recalling them as prime areas of new star formation.
And they needed an ocean, so surely they were coming to Earth, the only ocean planet that we know for sure exists in any universe.

God gave Noah the rainbow sign
No more water, the fire next time.
First episode ends with a flood washing over the Uppards.
Just before dusk and the final reckoning, a rainbow appears on the horizon over the sea.
I have to think this was an homage by Flanagan to James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time. Disillusionment with religion. A looming inferno if we don’t realize we’re all on this island together.
Sometimes it felt a little slow, sometimes a bit heavy handed. But overall I really enjoyed it, for both the plot and themes.
Love Actually, actually? Closer at least. Sometimes overly broad acting direction early (I say direction because it was Winslet and Diaz.) But it settled in, and delivered coziness and charming actors. And might have been a bit old fashioned at the time, but fares better in retrospect for it.

For me they are both passive ideation core. Donnie Darko is a collection of healing fantasies, for a character who bristles against fake dichotomies (fear/love) and the hypocrisy/inhospitability of society towards those who can't or won't conform. It's imagining a metaphysical scenario where the character's loved ones and community would be better off if he didn't exist.…
5 stars as an over the top stylized action movie that screams death to colonialism.
-5 stars because it’s done to promote more of the same violence, cruelty, and oppression. Just with different oppressors in charge.
Some background: RRR is an incredible action movie with seriously troubling politics.
Brought to mind another great Americana fairy tale of two kids fleeing evil, Over the Garden Wall.
Soothing songs throughout bring menace and melancholy. The trip down the river with our vulnerable children in the boat and innocent animals along the bank. Unexpected moments provided haunting beauty, like that flowing underwater shot, and the striking compositions of light and shadow.
