  I don’t think I’ll ever be able to comprehend the extent of cruelty that people will have towards those they dehumanize. The choice to be mean is actually more hurtful than the discrimination.

  It never really fails to shock me how willing and easy people are to dehumanize and then abuse others who don’t fit within a certain box. The fact that this documentary was so difficult to access doesn’t showcase the need to protect viewers from being exposed to cruelty, but rather the need for institutions to hide reality for day to day people who are otherwise not aware of what goes on in mental health institutions. I wish that this was shown instead of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or Girl Interrupted. Perhaps it’s too painful. But I think that’s what makes it so critical.
