I couldn't have my mom and dad... yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life. It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again, and it's super-simple. You can look at it and say: "Okay, these two people die, and okay, bring these two people back to life, and oh, doesn't that feel good?" Yeah, it did! It's simple, and this is what art does and this is what stories…

There’s this thing that happens to me when I’m reading a really good book, where I start hearing the author’s voice in my head as I go about my life, like my brain is trying to inhabit the author’s world and describe my experience through their eyes.
Wong Kar-wai is one of the few directors that has a similar effect on me: this movie gave me an afterglow where the blues felt blue-er and the greens greener, the rain felt rainy-er and the pineapples more pineapple-y.

To understand this movie, it probably helps to have a good knowledge of Argentina’s Dirty War period, during which a military junta…

All the history/patriotic dorks need to chill out and enjoy the show.
They gave Tsui Hark an insane budget and he did not disappoint: yeah the movie could have been way shorter, some narrative bits are contrived and boring, but when it gets going it’s one of the best war-action movies I’ve ever seen.

    Some highlights:
    - that long take with the soldiers in the dry riverbed and the airplanes flying over them. Mesmerizing: it gave me one of the…
