Hilarious and horrifying at the same time. Powerfully creative and compelling, the film still holds up in this current day and it’s amazing how the concept of fabricated reality behind the TV screens was executed here.
I do wish that it had better production quality visually and in its score, though.
Commendably packaged artsy film with lovely visual direction, an engaging sound design and fantastic performances but unfortunately flops when unraveling the plot.
Kana hops from point to point, seemingly sure yet confused at the same time, and that makes for a very intricate character to be portrayed. Her unusual charm is such a strong pull for the film, but sadly poorly supported in the second half of the film. It’s pretty much a somewhat typical plot by this point - a detective that goes “too deep” - but man the execution here is incredible and truly in a class of its own.
Gripping and unnerving. Kurosawa’s mastery in staging and developing unsettling tension is unparalleled, I am convinced now. Camerawork is wonderful, and made even better with how fast the story developed across the film. It was brilliant and I really love that aspect.
A masterclass in crime thriller. Unbelievable.
